Ball valves are a popular type of industrial control valve that's commonly used in the oil and gas industry. These valves are essential for controlling the flow of liquids, gases, and other fluids in piping systems. They can be manually operated or motorized, and are available in multiple types and sizes.
The Body of the Valve
A ball valve's body is a circular or oval-shaped piece of metal, plastic, or ceramic material that contains all of the internal components. A round ball is inserted through one end of the body, and the other end is connected to the stem or external control mechanism. The ball is either free-floating or trunnion mounted.
The Ball Design
The most common ball valve type is a floating ball. This valve has a ball that matches the pipe diameter and is fitted into the body of the valve. The valve is made to move on its axis through a handle or gear that connects to the ball's center hole or bore. The ball rotates to open or close the valve, which controls the flow of liquid or gas.
Floating Ball Valves are the most common valve types, but there are also trunnion-mounted and plug-type ball valves. Trunnion-mounted ball valves have a ball that is supported by cupped seats, which hold it in place. This type of valve is less expensive than floating-type ball valves and can withstand higher operating torque.
Reduced Bore Valves
A reduced-bore valve has a smaller diameter than the same size pipe, so it can withstand smaller flows and fewer pressure losses. These valves are typically used in applications where there is little risk of product turbulence or particle build-up. They are more inexpensive than full-bore ball valves and can be used with a check valve on the downstream side.
Top-Entry Designs
A top-entry ball valve design allows you to remove the bonnet of the valve to access the interior for assembly, disassembly, repairs and maintenance. This type of valve is ideal for applications that require frequent cleaning, repairing and maintaining the ball valve's seals and seats without disturbing the two ends of the body.
Brass & Bronze
These are two of the most common materials used to make ball valves. They are resistant to corrosion and abrasion, and can handle a wide range of chemicals. They are used in a variety of industries, including chemical processing, water treatment, pharmaceutical and food and beverage production.
Vinylidene fluoride polymer (PVDF)
A thermoplastic fluoropolymer, PVDF is a high-purity, durable and light weight material that can be easily formed into different shapes. It is highly resistant to corrosive and acidic chemicals, and can be easily cleaned with hot water.
Stainless Steel
A stainless steel ball valve is ideal for applications that require long-lasting durability and resistance to corrosive materials. It is also resistant to rust and oxidation.
Bronze
A brass ball valve is ideal for applications that need a no-lead product, and they are used in a variety of industries. They are resistant to abrasion and corrosion, and they are also able to withstand high temperature environments.
